Compare speech-to-text models on your own audio

Run Deepgram, AssemblyAI, OpenAI and other transcription models on the same recording, without integrating three separate APIs. Upload or record once, pick the models, and read the transcripts one after another with word error rate and response time.

The playground is in the Speechall console. Sign in or create an account to open it.

One playground for models from many providers

The Speechall playground lists the transcription models in the Speechall catalog. Next to Deepgram (including Nova-3), AssemblyAI and OpenAI (Whisper and GPT Transcribe), the catalog includes models from providers such as ElevenLabs, Speechmatics, Gladia, Microsoft Azure, Rev AI and Groq. Each provider has its own strengths, and the right one depends on your audio. The table lists the models you can pick in the playground, with each model's rate and main features.

35 models from the Speechall catalog, last checked November 7, 2026. Rates are what Speechall charges per hour of audio, in USD. See the model catalog for every feature and the full list of variants.

A lower rate or a longer feature list doesn't tell you which model transcribes your recordings best. That is what the playground is for.

You don't need an account or API key with each provider. One Speechall account and one prepaid credit balance cover every model in the catalog.

How it works

  1. Add your audio

Upload an audio file, or drag it onto the page. You can also record from your microphone in the browser, with pause, resume and a preview before you send it.

  2. Pick the models

Add as many models as you want from the catalog, for example a Deepgram, an AssemblyAI and an OpenAI model. Each selected model shows its listed hourly rate. Set the language and output format, and optional settings such as diarization, punctuation, smart formatting, expected speakers, an initial prompt or custom vocabulary.

  3. Paste a reference transcript (optional)

If you have a correct transcript of the recording, paste it in. The playground uses it to calculate word error rate (WER) for each result and to highlight the differences.

  4. Compare the results

The file is uploaded once and sent to every selected model in parallel. Each result appears as soon as its model finishes, with the transcript, its response time, its WER and a diff against the reference. Failed requests show the error message for that model.

Output formats are plain text, JSON, JSON text, SRT and VTT. With JSON output the playground also shows the detected language, audio duration and timed segments when the model returns them. You can copy each transcript.

Why test on your own audio

Published benchmarks use someone else's recordings. Your audio has its own accents, vocabulary, microphones, background noise and number of speakers, and those change how each model performs. A model that does well on clean podcast audio can behave differently on a phone call, a noisy meeting room or a lecture full of technical terms.

Pick a few short recordings that represent your real traffic, including the difficult ones. Write a correct transcript for at least one of them, so the word error rate in the playground measures errors and not only the differences between models.

What to compare

  • Names, product terms and jargon from your domain, spelled the way you need them
  • Numbers, dates, currencies and email addresses
  • Punctuation and capitalization, if you show transcripts to people
  • Speaker labels on recordings with two or more speakers, including overlapping speech
  • Sections with background noise, music, cross-talk or low volume
  • Accents and languages your users actually speak, including switches between languages
  • Timestamps and SRT or VTT output, if you need subtitles
  • Response time and the hourly rate for the volume of audio you expect

WER treats every word the same. Read the diffs as well: one wrong product name can matter more than several missing filler words.

After you choose a model

The playground calls the same Speechall API you integrate with, using the same model IDs, such as deepgram.nova-3, assemblyai.universal-3-5-pro or openai.gpt-transcribe. Put the ID you picked in your request, with the same language, output format and options. To move to a different provider later, change the model ID. Provider-specific options don't all carry over, so check each model's page for the parameters it supports.

Billing works with prepaid credits. You buy credits in the console, and each request, from the playground or the API, draws them down at the model's rate. The billing page shows current purchase fees before checkout.

If you already know you will use one provider and need features only its own API offers, integrating that provider directly can be simpler. Read speech API gateway vs direct integration for the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Deepgram, AssemblyAI and OpenAI models on the same audio at once?

Yes. In the Speechall playground you select several models and upload one file. The playground sends the file to every selected model in parallel and shows each result as soon as that model finishes.

Do I need a reference transcript to compare models?

No, it is optional. With a reference transcript, the playground calculates word error rate for each result against your text. Without one, it uses the first successful result as the reference, so the numbers show how much the models differ from each other, not which one is correct.

How is word error rate calculated in the playground?

WER is substitutions plus deletions plus insertions, divided by the number of words in the reference. Text is lowercased and whitespace is collapsed before comparison. Punctuation is kept, so a missing comma or period counts as a difference.

Does testing in the playground use credits?

Yes. Playground requests run on your Speechall account and draw on the same prepaid credit balance as API requests. Each model in the picker shows its listed hourly rate, and the billing page in the console shows current purchase fees.

Can I compare streaming models?

The playground has a separate Streaming tab for live transcription from your microphone over WebSocket. It runs one streaming-capable model at a time and needs a Speechall API key, so you compare streaming models one session after another.

Can I use the same model in my application afterwards?

Yes. The playground calls the Speechall speech-to-text API with the same model IDs, such as deepgram.nova-3, assemblyai.universal-3-5-pro or openai.gpt-transcribe. Use that ID and the same options in your API request. Not every model supports every optional parameter, so check the model page.

Try the models on your recording

Upload one file, select the models you are considering and compare the transcripts before you write any integration code.
